Goat Project

Project Leaders: Jessica Davis

Meeting Dates/Times: We will meet in person

  • TBD

Ever wonder why a goat has a beard?

Goats—dairy type, pygmy, Angora and Boer—make great 4-H projects. They are relatively easy to handle, interesting and inexpensive to keep. In addition to learning about traditional animal care in a 4-H goat project, you can explore the use of products that come from goats such as milk, meat and fiber.

Goats have a unique personality and are a great animal for youth to raise.

Youth ages 9 to 19 can raise market (meat) goats (breeds include Boer and Kiko), dairy goats (breeds include Saanen, Nubian, Alpine, Toggenburg), and pet goats (breeds include Pygmy and Nigerian dwarfs).

Youth have the opportunity to raise their goat projects throughout the year and then exhibit them at the Sacramento County Fair in May and the California State Fair in July.
