Why Cooking Matters

Cooking with children can help them learn many important skills, including:
Math
Counting, measuring, and fractions are natural concepts that can be learned while following a recipe
Science
Explaining how food changes with temperature or how certain foods can be healthy can teach kids about science
Language
Practicing new vocabulary as you describe how food looks, feels, and tastes can help build language skills
Planning and completing projects
Following a recipe from start to finish can help kids develop these skills
Following directions
Reading recipes, food labels, and instructions on how to use appliances can help kids learn to follow directions

Important Benefits of Cooking

One of the most important benefits of cooking with your children is that they learn to appreciate the food they're eating.
